Last weekend, I co-hosted a health event with a fellow yoga teacher. One of our speakers was an Ayurvedic doctor and she gave us a brief intro to Ayurveda and it’s teachings. A key takeaway for me was hearing that Ayurveda believes that we aren’t what we eat, like the saying tells us. Instead, we are what we digest. Makes sense, right? We are all individual and kale is not a health food for everyone.
My friend just told me she hasn’t been feeling good lately, and she found out that one of the reasons was that she was eating too much raw kale. Who knew you could get sick from kale? Well, you can, and it’s a good thing to remember. Not every health food works for everybody and we should all take the time to figure out what works for us.
Currently, the health craze seems to include coconut in everything. Coconut milk, dried coconut, coconut nectar, coconut aminos, coconut oil, coconut butter, etc. I went to get a green smoothie when I was in New York and I could not find a smoothie I wanted that didn’t have some form of coconut in it. I happen to love coconut, but lately, coconut does not love me back. I honestly think I may have od’ed on coconut when I first gave up dairy since it was my creamy substitute. The good news? I figured it out. The bad news? Coconut is creeping into everything “healthy” and I can’t seem to get away from it.
Now let’s come back to Ayurveda. There are ways to help you digest whatever it is you eat, and one of their tried and true herbs suggested to eat everyday is turmeric. Half a teaspoon a day keeps the doctor away. Turmeric is not only good for digestion, it cleanses the liver and blood, burns toxins, prevents alzheimer’s, is good for the skin, and the list goes on and on. During her talk, we got to try golden milk, which is milk with turmeric in it. I’d had a golden milk latte before made with coconut milk, which is currently not an option for me, but this one was made with almond milk. So it gave me the idea to try an almond milk latte version at home. And pretty sure it’s absolutely delicious. And it doesn’t contain any caffeine, so it can be sipped on anytime of day.
So go, make one! It’s a golden way to start your day.
(Or try my Indian Minced Beef Stew for another way to add turmeric to your day!)
- 1 cup // 250 mL almond milk
- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 cardamom pods, cracked open
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup
- Pinch of salt
- Place all the ingredients into a small pot. Stir together in a small pot on medium heat. Heat through, about 5-10 minutes. Remove the cardamom pods. Drink as is, or froth the milk before pouring into your glass.

Sounds great! I’ll have to try this – most likely with cow’s milk though. Aside from the turmeric, very similar looking to chai tea latte. I wonder if a chai tea latte with turmeric would be good? I use the Mighty Leaf Chai Tea bag.
Ya, that would taste really good actually! Let me know how it goes! Cow’s milk is allowed 🙂
